$50,000 in funding received for Baaka Cultural and Art Cente

The Baaka Cultural and Art Centre in Wilcannia has received a $50,000 grant from the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal, which will be used to fit out the art centre component of the project.

Baaka Cultural and Art Centre Operations Manager, Gail Russell welcomed the funding and said the money would be used to purchase equipment, storage, work benches, materials and resources.

“The art centre space will be open to the whole community to gather and create, fostering talent and building community cohesion,” she said.

“It will provide a year-round civic space for participation in culture and a space to bring the community together.”

The art centre is part of the $9.5 million Baaka Cultural and Art Centre project which is currently under construction at the former Knox and Downs store site and will transform the once derelict site into a state-of-the-art cultural and art centre and visitor experience.

Ms Russell said the art centre would be a place for the whole community to gather and produce works that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Wilcannia.

“The art centre is located in the historic storeroom and once refurbished, will celebrate and grow the crafts of artists in the region providing a space for collaboration and partnerships,” she said.
